LoRaWAN is a low-power, wide area networking (LPWAN) protocol designed to wirelessly connect end nodes to the internet. LoRaWAN devices transmit signals over a long distance and provides deep indoor coverage. It supports energy-efficient, cost-effective, and secure communications for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
LoRaWAN is an open and interoperable standard created for mass IoT deployment. It has the most public and private network deployments of all low power WAN's, and provides global network coverage. It removes barriers that block network communication, so the signals can penetrate through concrete and steel to reach devices in difficult locations. LoRaWAN is also very robust so that it can operate in harsh weather conditions and noisy communication environments. Meanwhile, LoRaWAN is incredibly power efficient, using very little energy when communicating with objects. LoRaWAN sensors can run on batteries for years!
Here we list the top 6 features including:
A typical LoRaWAN network is deployed in a star-of-stars topology. This provides a highly flexible communication network by supporting multiple transmission paths between end devices and gateways. The gateways forward the data to a Network Server which manage the network and transmit data to the application servers.
The following table shows differences between LoRaWAN and other wireless technologies, including RFID, Wi-Fi, NB-IoT, LTE-M, proprietary LPWAN and Mesh. It helps you understand more about the features of LoRaWAN and choose the right technology for your IoT projects.

Leveraging the power of LoRaWAN technology, Advantech has developed a one-stop LoRaWAN solution which is comprised of LoRaWAN I/O modules, gateways, and sensors. The solution allows businesses to easily deploy a secure LoRaWAN network that can be applied to different vertical markets for facility monitoring. It offers an alternative to traditional one-by-one inspections to monitor equipment and facilities, which can improve business resiliency and efficiencies.
The superior features of Advantech LoRaWAN solution include:
LoRaWAN I/O modules together with LoRaWAN gateways create an effective environmental monitoring solution. Advantech offers LoRaWAN I/O modules, WISE-4610, and WISE-2200-M, which support the Modbus/RTU protocol. The modules are compatible with a variety of I/O ports, including AI, DI, DO, PO, and RS-485, which means they can be connected to sensors directly and adopted in different applications, such as facility temperature monitoring, energy management, gate on/off counting, and detection of pressure, liquid levels, and leakage.
LoRaWAN I/O modules collect field data and wirelessly transmit the data to WISE-6610 LoRaWAN high-performance gateway, which supports Modbus and MQTT protocols for building LoRaWAN private and public networks. The entire system can be implemented quickly and at a lower cost because LoRaWAN technology allows a large number of modules to connect to one gateway, and covers long transmission distances without cable installation.

Vibration sensor plays a key role in predictive maintenance as it can monitor machine health and detect problems before unplanned down times occur. By utilizing LoRaWAN, this turnkey predictive maintenance solution provides long-range bidirectional communication between sensors and gateways. Like LoRaWAN I/O modules, the LoRaWAN smart vibration sensor also sends data to the LoRaWAN gateway, and the data is further transmitted to a central supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for security and a guard against abnormalities.
Advantech WISE-2410 LoRaWAN smart vibration sensor can detect the vibration of equipment 24 hours a day. It also makes immediate diagnosis that meets ISO 10816 standards — a vibration monitoring standard to evaluate machine vibration without coding and algorithm implementation.
